DESCRIPTION

Scripps Institution of Oceanography (SIO) at UC San Diego is one of the most important centers for global earth science research and education in the world. Scripps scientists work to understand and protect the planet by investigating our oceans, Earth, and atmosphere to find solutions to our greatest environmental challenges. Scripps leads research in climate change impacts and adaptation, resilience to hazards, conservation and biodiversity, oceans and human health, national security, and innovative technology to observe the planet.

Supporting SIO, Shipboard Technical Support (STS) provides specialized expertise, personnel, instrumentation and support services to scientists that use oceanographic research vessels. STS also designs and supports specialized equipment, instrumentation and services for oceanographic research programs. STS is composed of several technical groups that provide a distinct set of services and expertise.

The Shipboard Instrumentation Technician operates and maintains permanently installed oceanographic instrumentation on research vessels. At sea this position supports researchers with the use of shipboard instrumentation, data collection, and assists researchers with the use of their research equipment on the vessel. When not at sea this position conducts instrumentation maintenance, conducts planning for shipboard instrumentation needs of future projects and provides remote technical assistance to technical staff at sea.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Working knowledge of safety, legal, cultural and regulatory requirements relative to field research responsibility.
  • Working knowledge of research discipline, principles, concepts, analysis and / or operations being conducted at field/ remote sites.
  • Experience with the interfaces and protocols used to connect instrumentation system to computer systems.
  • Ability to troubleshoot oceanographic instrumentation equipment at sea with manufacturer shore-based support.
  • Basic electronic troubleshooting skills
  • Experience with the operation of oceanographic instrumentation systems
  • Ability to work in remote locations and at sea under potentially adverse conditions for extended periods.
  • Demonstrates ability to work with a team, and to meet deadlines with minimal supervision.
  • Proficient research and analytical skills.
  • Demonstrated communication skills with project team members.
  • Experience with computer hardware and software maintenance

SPECIAL CONDITIONS

  • Must be willing and able to travel globally without restrictions
  • Must be able to obtain a Transportation Workers Identification Credential (TWIC) through the Transportation Security Administration (TSA). Overtime and weekends may be required.
  • Must be willing and able to spend up to four months at sea annually, in one to two month increments.
  • Must pass background investigation through the US Department of Justice (DOJ).

This position has been identified as a Mandated Reporter pursuant to the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and requires immediate reporting of physical abuse, sexual abuse, emotional abuse, or neglect of anyone under the age of 18. It is the responsibility of the Mandated Reporter to ensure that they obtain proper training in order to fulfill their reporting responsibilities as required by the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and University policy, and to complete and submit the required reports to the UC San Diego Police Department without delay.

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $58,600 - $100,800 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $28.07 - $48.28

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
